Spencer Tenants Brush Up on Dental Hygiene

January 26th, 2012

SPENCER – Local dentist Dr. James Ostromecky gave a reassuring presentation to nearly ten Senior Living at Prouty tenants this past recently, explaining that many older people typically resist or stop seeing a dentist, not realizing the links between oral care and overall health. Periodontal disease can not be cured, but can be controlled, and as it may related to heart disease and consequently diabetes.  Left untreated, it causes our immune systems to fight harder.People were encouraged to bring lists of all medications to their dental providers, including herbal remedies, vitamins, and OTC (over the counter) products, as they are informative toward conditions such as dry mouth and blood thinning. “Dr. O”, as he is known, discussed options for people having difficulty with conditions such as arthritis or MS, discussed realignment of dentures, and prompted that, with education, we are capable of making necessary changes. “Mrs. O” ,  the dentist’s wife and office’s Treatment Coordinator, reviewed Mass Health coverage, and various health plan and payment options. Everyone left with a “goody bag” of care products.
