MHPI Holds Employee Enrichment Day

NEWTON, Ma. – MHPI, Inc. held its annual Employee Enrichment Day at the Forefront Center for Conferences and Meetings in Waltham on May 17. The day featured both educational and social components as nearly 60 of the company’s employees as well as members of the Board of Directors took part in the festivities.

The event featured a team building presentation from Gary Lapierre from Bridgewell as well as a time management talk by noted lecturer Pam Kristan. Tim Burgers and Colleen Bayard of the Home Care Alliance were in attendance to discuss the rudiments and basics of the home care industry, a rapidly growing segment of MHPI’s business through its service division, RSSI Home Care. MHPI Director of Foundation and Corporate Support Judy Eddy delivered a talk on development and how fund-raising involves all employees in one way or another.

“Our guest speakers each brought a unique and relevant area of expertise to the table and shared their knowledge to our team,” MHPI President Sheldon D. Bycoff said. “As our business continues to grow, we realize the continued need to further develop and train our employees. We are always looking for ways to enhance the education and credentials of our staff.”

Following lunch, a select group of company employees were recognized for their accomplishments. Individuals (please see complete list below) were honored for their Years of Service to MHPI in increments of five years, with a host of individuals receiving five and ten-year service pins. An element of surprise was then injected as President Sheldon D. Bycoff received pins in increments of five years up to 35 years in tribute to his longevity with the organization he founded. It was then time to recognize five employees that went above and beyond and joined a long and impressive list of past Exceptional Performance Awards recipients. Home Health Aides Bintu Bertille and Tara-Mari Husbands, Senior Home Health Aide and two-time honoree Indhira Garcia, Senior Living at Prouty (Spencer, MA) Resident Manager Keith Carter and maintenance employee Lamont Brookins all were recognized.

“In terms of the day, it really was a thrill to present awards to a great number of employees, both in recognition of their longevity and their performance,” Bycoff said. “It is a credit to us as a team that we have such a large corps of long-time and loyal employees who are ready, willing and able to usher in the new wave of team members we welcome as a result of expansion and programmatic and service growth.”

Since 1975, MHPI, Inc. has been enhancing the lives of those it serves through a variety of programs. These include the development of very-low income service-enriched housing, the delivery of community-based home care services as well as consulting in the area of property management. Today, MHPI and its division RSSI Home Care enjoy a presence in Metro Boston, the Greater Worcester Area, Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod.

Spencer Tenants Become Educated About Insomnia

SPENCER – TV, or not TV….that is the question….or one of the questions one must pose when talking about insomnia: causes, symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis and remedies. Specifically, addressing the unique factors that assist or resist our ability to get adequate sleep, such as: does TV help me relax to fall asleep, or is it too stimulating? Do naps, nutrition, stress, anxiety, depression, medications, schedules or particular habits affect my sleep? Amy Finkle, Director of Marketing and Administration at Parsons Hill Nursing and Rehab in Worcester, gave nearly a dozen tenants at Senior Living at Prouty a requested and very well received presentation on Insomnia in mid May. As this is a disorder that affects many of us at least occasionally, the helpful information presented gave us many considerations that may affect our energy levels, moods, health, work performance and quality of life.

Intergenerational Programming at Prouty

SPENCER — There was a lot of noisy fun in the Community Room at Senior Living at Prouty recently as Anne Mulrain’s Lake Street School first graders enthusiastically recited poetry from every season of the year, with animated gestures that produced many laughs. In the audience were tenants, along with the Lifeskills from nearby David Prouty High School class, who thoroughly enjoyed the show. After a quick snack, we played “Cat and Mouse” with the parachute on loan; some people even abandoned their seats to participate in the exercise! Everyone went home with colorful paper critters, such as caterpillars, ladybugs, or butterflys, made by the first graders. Below are some photos. Spencer Tenants Create Jewelry

SPENCER — Back by popular demand was the “Exploring Creativity with Beading” workshop provided through Tenants Assistance Program of MassHousing and held at Senior Living at Prouty. Instructor Linda Novick taught jewelry making using a variety of colorful beads, shells and artifacts. There were some groans when tiny beads slipped, some sought after advice or approval, and lots of laughs and busy fingers as tenants made necklaces, bracelets and earrings for themselves or others.

The creations were awesome, and everyone enjoyed a productive afternoon.

It’s Birthday Time Again on Bellingham Hill

CHELSEA – Oreo cake and ice cream, coffee, and refreshments were the talk of the afternoon recently as tenants at Senior Living on Bellingham Hill enjoyed an hour of celebrating April birthdays and watching “Family Feud”, participating with high energy.

One tenant states “ I feel so special because it is my birthday month. Im happy I get to celebrate it with my neighbors’.”

Zelda Latest to Take to Prouty Stage

SPENCER – Tenants at Senior Living at Prouty as well as seniors from Spencer and the surrounding communities took in a rousing rendition of “Intro to I, Zelda” in the community room at the building. The one-woman show, performed by Rita Parisi from Waterfall Productions, took the audience of nearly 50 way back into time to New Year’s Eve 1940. The performance was made possible by a grant from a local chapter of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Parisi portrayed Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, the late wife of the late legendary novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald. On the verge of the calendar turning, Zelda so eloquently came face to face with her past and impending future. Following the performance, Parisi took part in a question and answer session with those in attendance, answering questions about Zelda’s life as well as the era of the 1940’s.

Parisi fully intends on returning to the Spencer area in the not-too-distant future to entertain tenants and area seniors again with one of her other shows.

Prouty Tenants Celebrate Earth Day

SPENCER — The David Prouty High School Lifeskills class paid its monthly visit to Senior Living at Prouty recently to celebrate Earth Day. To mark this great occasion, tenants and students chose various promotional messages for recycling and caring for our earth to color. Later these will be put on brown bags to give to a local market reminding consumers to “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” We enjoyed jokes like “What did the Pacific Ocean say to the Atlantic Ocean?” and laughed at the “Nothing, it just waved!” response. Although it was back to school after a week off and the morning was dreary, everyone was in a festive mood, and shared tales of their vacations.

Chelsea Tenants Find An Excuse to Party

CHELSEA — The March Birthday celebration at Senior Living on Bellingham Hill was still filled with the luck of the Irish. Tenants enjoyed cake, ice cream, flavored coffee, and a variety of other refreshments, while spending time with their neighbors and friends. One tenant performed Happy Birthday in accompanied with a beautiful dance, first in Spanish and then in English.

All were satisfied with fulfilling dessert and community spirit, and went home with a smile.

Luck of the Irish Invades Bellingham Hill

CHELSEA — The luck of the Irish was sprinkled early at Senior Living on Bellingham Hill recently. French Toast, pancakes, scrambled eggs with cheese and toast, satisfied the appetite of nearly 20 tenants. The hearty meal was washed down with orange juice, and flavored coffee, as tenants danced to Irish music. A few in attendance willingly shared stories of lucky times in their lives, and others expressed how lucky they felt to live at SLOBH.

Everyone looks forward to more days filled with laughter, community and good food.

Prouty Tenants Enjoy Coffee Hour

SPENCER – Many tenants enjoyed the Donut and Coffee Social this morning, held in the sunny first floor lobby at Senior Living at Prouty. This is part of an activity series provided by MHPI once a month, each hosted by a different person. Future monthly gatherings will include an Ice Cream Social, a Pizza Night, and a Bagels and Beverages Hour.
